Charles Dickens is an industry. His books have never been out of print, there are websites dedicated to him, and societies to appreciate his work, a museum occupying the house where he wrote Oliver Twist, and another one in Portsmouth in the house where he was born. Until recently he was pictured on the ten pound note. You would think that his life had been thoroughly done. And yet curiously little attention has been paid to his family background. Everybody knows that he was sent to work in a blacking factory when his father was committed to debtor’s prison, and there are several excellent biographies of the man in print. Theresa Musgrove has taken a wider perspective to delve deep into the family and turn up fascinating details and scandals which surely found their way into Dickens’ fiction.
